Nathan Harmon Presents a Message of Hope and Community to HMS, HHS, and The Hudson Community

Nathan Harmon's presentations on Tuesday, January 28, focused on fostering better communication between parents and children, with a particular emphasis on resilience and the power of choice. Speaking to roughly 60 people in the evening, Harmon revisited themes he introduced earlier that day to HMS, HHS and Hudson Montessori students, discussing youth struggles and challenges in the face of modern pressures like social media. At the heart of his message were two core principles: make the "next best choice" and “treat others with kindness,” both of which encourage personal growth and positive relationships. Harmon highlighted the unique challenges young people face today, noting that they must learn how to navigate both successes and setbacks in a world increasingly shaped by technology.

“My middle schooler burst out talking about [Nathan’s] presentation as soon as he got home after school. [Nathan] also did a great job with the parent presentation!” ~ Christine (Hudson Parent)

Harmon also offered valuable insights for parents seeking to engage more meaningfully with their children. A major theme of his presentation was the importance of ensuring children feel that they have a "seat at the table" in family discussions and decisions. This means creating a space at home where children feel seen, heard, and valued, and where their thoughts and opinions are genuinely considered, even if they don’t always get their way. Harmon stressed that real communication is built on authenticity—parents must model honesty, vulnerability, and conflict resolution to help their children develop these skills themselves. He highlighted that human connection is key to building resilience, urging parents not to let technology replace face-to-face interactions. By controlling their reactions and responses, parents can help foster an environment that encourages growth and emotional strength in their children. Ultimately, Harmon encouraged small, daily steps toward positive change, reinforcing that progress—not perfection—builds stronger families.
