Community of Care

RESPONSIVE PROGRAMMING

THE POWER OF

Human Connectedness

In a world dominated by screens, The Power of Human Connectedness is more important than ever. This year, Hudson Community First is focusing on building key Developmental Assets such as: Family Support & Positive Communication, Other Adult Relationships, Caring, Integrity, and Interpersonal Competence. All of these assets grow when kids connect face-to-face. These relationships spark empathy, trust, and a true sense of belonging, giving our youth the foundation they need to thrive.

THE POWER OF

Human Connectedness

In today’s fast-paced, digitally driven world, human connectedness and face-to-face interactions are critical, especially for our youth, because they support healthy emotional, cognitive, and social development in ways that digital communication simply can't replicate.

5 REASONS HUMAN CONNECTEDNESS IS CRITICAL

1. Emotional Development

In-person interaction allows youth to read facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice, which are essential components of emotional intelligence.

2. Social Skills & Communication

Regular face-to-face contact teaches active listening, conflict resolution, and cooperative problem-solving.

3. Mental Health & Resilience

Genuine human connection helps reduce feelings of isolation, loneliness, and anxiety. Physical presence (a hug, a shared laugh, even eye contact) can trigger the release of oxytocin and serotonin (hormones that boost mood and lower stress.)

4. Digital Balance

In a time when screen time is at an all-time high, especially post-pandemic, in-person interactions offer a much-needed counterbalance to virtual communication. Real-life socializing anchors young people in the present moment and encourages mindfulness and attentiveness.

5. Identity Formation

Youth are still shaping their sense of self, and real-world experiences with peers, mentors, and adults provide critical feedback and affirmation. Face-to-face connection validates their experiences in a tangible way, helping build self-worth and confidence.

Science-Based Strategies for Raising Terrific Kids

In the blink of an eye, our kids will be adults facing countless serious threats—climate change, gun violence, political polarization, and disinformation, to name but a few. We’re not going to be able to solve all these intractable problems before our kids grow up—so how are we to prepare them for an impossibly complex and scary future?

Plagued by this question, award-winning science journalist Melinda Wenner Moyer interviewed parenting experts and researchers across multiple fields—psychology, education, information literacy, technology, business, and even addiction. What she discovered: even in these uncertain times, we can still teach our kids how to take care of themselves, fight for what they believe in, and bridge divides in ways most adults aren’t equipped to do.

Melinda Wenner Moyer is an award-winning contributing editor at Scientific

American, a regular contributor to The New York Times, and a former faculty

member at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. She also writes the

popular Substack newsletter Now What.

Growing Friendships: Understanding and Supporting Young Children’s Social Development

Friendships are an important part of early childhood, but young students are just learning what it means to be a friend. This talk will help parents understand the typical development of young friendships, which qualities and skills help children to make and keep friends, and how parents can help their children navigate social challenges. We will explore how friendships develop in preschool and kindergarten, the types of conflict frequently seen in early elementary school friendships, and common strategies for resolving conflicts at this age. While conflict is a normal and healthy part of relationships, we will also discuss how individual factors like a child's ability to self-regulate impacts their social skills and what parents can do to help them improve these skills. Further, Dr. Barlow will offer parents guidance regarding their role in helping their children navigate friendships including when to step in and help solve the problem and when to step back.
