Assets: How Does Your Child Rate?

THE 40 ASSETS

Hudson Community First is based on building developmental assets in youth. Assets are the essential building blocks for healthy youth that have been identified through the exhaustive research initiated by the Search Institute. The more assets young people have the more likely they will do well in school and the community... and the less likely they are to be involved in negative and unhealthy choices such as drug & alcohol use, sexual activity, violence and crime.

Search Institute has identified eight types of assets that are crucial for helping young people grow up healthy. Each type involves several specific assets. The asset types are:

Supporting and loving your child.

Empowering your child.

Setting clear and realistic boundaries and expectations.

Helping your child use her or his time in meaningful, constructive ways.

Encouraging your child to develop a lifetime commitment to learning.

Instilling in your child positive values.

Developing social competencies in your child.

Encouraging your child to form a positive identity.

Asset Resources

"Pursuing the common good is the work of all the community's residents and institutions, and Developmental Assets become a language and a tool for discussing this common good. When community members commit to building assets for and with young people, they nurture youth who are more likely to grow into responsible neighbors, citizens, parents, and workers."

- Peter Benson (President, Search Institute)
