An Expert Panel Discussion on Eating Disorders in Adolescence

Our Panel:

  • Brittany Davis, MEd, LPCC-S - Senior Regional Director, Midwest, The Emily Program - began her career in 2009 treating adolescents and families in intensive treatment settings alongside a multidisciplinary team. In 2018, she transitioned into a leadership role at our Cleveland Outpatient site overseeing treatment of all ages. In 2021 she entered her current regional leadership role overseeing 4 separate treatment facilities in the Columbus and Cleveland area. 

  • Valerie Nicholson, MS, RD, LD - Registered Dietician - started her eating disorder career in 2018 working with adolescents and families in partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment. In 2020, she expanded her work to treat all ages throughout all higher levels of care and outpatient settings. 

  • Kelsey Carpenter, PA, Lead Medical Provider, The Emily Program - has been treating adults and adolescents with eating disorders since 2022 with experience in all higher level of care settings. 

Questions the panel addresses:

  1. Please tell us a little bit about eating disorders. 

  2. What complications can occur?

  3. How would I know if my kid is struggling with an eating disorder? What are the warning signs? 

  4. Lots of kids exercise, play sports, "eat  healthy" - when it is concerning? 

  5. If I'm concerned, how would I talk to my kid about it? What would I do? 

  6. Is treating an eating disorder something that parents can do on their own?  

  7. "Why is it important that I get my child in treatment" 

  8. What happens when I call? What does treatment look like? 

  9. If you had a magic wand to change the world related to eating disorders, what would you do?
